A native of Endicott, New York, trombonist, composer, and arranger Al Cron earned a degree in music education from The Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY in 1990 before moving to Florida where he performed on cruise ships, Walt Disney World, and Universal Studios. In 1993, Al settled in Boston, Massachusetts where he established himself as an in-demand trombonist, touring with The Artie Shaw Orchestra and performing with Aretha Franklin, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Rogers, and The Temptations. Al taught part-time at Berklee College of Music from 2001 to 2008. While earning his master’s degree from the New England Conservatory in 2000, Al studied with jazz masters Hal Crook, Bob Brookmeyer, George Russell, John McNeil, and George Garzone.
Al released his debut album “1999”, featuring Ken Hadley on drums, Bronek Suchanek on bass, John Wilkins on guitar, and John Greiner on saxophone.
His second release, *Circles and Roots* (2004), featured Dave Zinno on bass, Ed Tomassi on tenor saxophone, Bob Schlink on guitar, and Vinny Pagano on drums.
In 2024, Al returned to the studio with a new sextet featuring Ed Tomassi on tenor saxophone, John Piazza Jr. on trumpet, Chris Taylor on piano, John Pierce on bass, and Brooke Sofferman on drums. Al’s most recent project celebrates his passion for the standards and the straight-ahead, “Blue Note” style jazz of the late 1950s and early 60s.
